What is "dropped sole?"?
I am planning to adopt a horse from a rescue and the owner of the rescue said that last time he was trimmed the farrier took off a lot of "dropped sole." The horse had gone quite a while without trimming before that trim. We do our own trimming and have never heard this term. What is it and is it a big deal?
A dropped sole is when a horse isn't trimmed, but neither is he very active. The cells of the sole just build up, compacting rather than sluffing off as they will when ridden or on pasture with lots of normal moving around.
A normal hoof will grow out kind of like a fingernail does, with the hoof wall growing out past the sole. When the sole is retained, as the hoof wall grows, the sole of the foot follows it down.
I would certainly have the vet x ray his feet. The dropped sole can sometimes mess up the frog, which is the circulation pump of the foot and leg. It takes management to slowly change the foot; it can't be done all at once.
It can also be as a result of founder and a rotated coffin bone. That of course is a big deal!
you need to get pictures of what is going on inside those feet.
