The "survival knife" concept is based on the idea that for some reason, you couldn't pack a hatchet, correct?
I mean, the idea of chopping wood is with a knife is desperation, right? In fact, I am five foot four and 117 pounds, and I really don't have the arm/upper body strength to chop much of anything with a hatchet. You need big arms like Hulk Hogan to chop down something like a tree with a hatchet. I need a lightweight axe with a full handle.
And is it just me, or is chopping wood really hard? I have excellent endurance. I run, do yoga, belong to a soccer league, go to the gym and workout. But if I swing an axe full force for about five minutes, my arms hurt. Same with paddling a canoe. After about 15 minutes, I'm done.
When I think of my "survival knife" I do not consider that to be my hunters knife or my Bowie "show" knife I wear for Mountain man rendezvous. My "survival knife" is a combination multi tool, the Leatherman Wave. This is my daily driver so to speak where ere I go it goes on my belt in a hand made leather pouch that I made.
