why does my female cat grab a piece of clothing with her mouth and knead and sway back and forth?
My cat will sometimes walk up to a T-shirt or some other article of clothing I have laying somewhere, grab it in her mouth, and then do the kneading thing while swaying her butt. She also gets this glazed-over look in her eyes while she's doing it and I have to really try and snap her out of it. She is unaltered so Im assuming this has something to do with her heat cycle, but Im not sure and I dont really know what this means in the whole scheme of things. Should I stop her from doing this? Is it therapeutic for her or something? Is there something Im not providing her (besides a boy cat which isnt going to happen) that I should be?
I have two boy cats and they can't sit to be petted without sucking at a blanket (or clothing, though I prefer the blanket). It's natural.
Most often it is because she wasn't quite done weening. She just associates the comfort of suckling and kneading with safety and affection. It has nothing to do with actually being hungry, though. It's just the feeling of comfort.
Cats that don't do the suckling thing still knead and, even, drool a little when they're all curled up and snuggling with you. It's the same instinct.
She chooses your clothes because they smell like you.
Don't worry about it and there's no need to change the behavior. She's just in cat heaven.
