Knife Law for Under 18's? (camping and fishing purposes)?
From my research, the only thing I've managed to gather, is that the knife law in the UK is rather 'cloudy' when it comes to possession. Say I owned a folding knife (BLACKHAWK Hornet II), that has a liner locking mechanism & a 3.1" blade, and used it in camping situations (when not in use, stored in Bergen/Rucksack) and fishing (as a general multipurpose tool) would I be breaking the law?
Carrying a knife that isn't on the banned list is legal if there is a good reason to carry it. Chefs walk the streets between kitchen and home with massive knives in a bag or case. Gardeners use pruning knives, tradesmen use Stanley knives and fishermen carry bait-cutting and filleting knives.
You should have suitable justification for carrying any sharp blade or other instrument you have with you.....that is, sufficiently good reason to carry it.
At under 18 unfortunately you get tarred with the same brush as the teenage hooligans and street fighters and need to be extra careful. That folding knife of yours has a 3.1" blade...over the 3" limit for a folding knife, and you'd be better to carry a smaller one with a stiff stubby blade not looking like it could reasonably be used for or is intended for stabbing or slashing.
An ex-Army strongly build penknife with a 3" or 2 1/2" blade, a tin opener and a bottle opener, is ideal for camping and looks like it's meant for camping, not for fighting.
That's what I've used for many years of camping.
A knife is not necessarily an offensive weapon...only if it is intended to be or is used in an offensive manner or is on the banned knives list from the Home Office.
A safety pin is an offensive weapon if you stick it into somebody's neck or face. That's an old one.
Three safety pins bent the right way so they have stoppers at the back and the points stick out between the fingers of a clenched fist....blind somebody easy with that and mostly can't be seen.
OK I kept rough company. Been east in the Army. Got training for all sorts of stuff.
But you can carry a safety pin perfectly legally. It's intent or usage that changes the category it's in from an innocent object to an offensive weapon.
Carrying a legal knife well packed away so it's not a quick job getting to it shows no offensive intent on your part and if the knife is of a type and size suited for the stated purpose of your carrying it you will be OK.
Idiot survival knives with serrated curved blades and technical stupid shapes made to look flashy and tough are not OK. They are of very little use as 'survival knives'.
My 'survival knife' is a 3" blade ordinary but tough penknife.
I sometimes carry a small axe for camping trips, in a proper sheath, and a couple of knives in my fishing gear. I fish a quite lot. No problem.
I get the sea for breakfast as the book says. (good read...what a laugh)...and lunch and supper some days...cheap living by the sea.

Most times I go camping with a penknife as the only knife I have apart from a small kitchen knife ground down to a 3" long unpointed blade for food preparation and eating and I've done that on five continents.
Knives can go into checked-in baggage on planes as long as they are of a legal sort both here and in the destination country. It's best to check or you'll lose it at the other end anyway and get a bad name on the government books where you're going even before you've bought your first coffee.
See mine and the others in agreement with checking in knives on here...I worked in an airport for ten years.

However in some cities...London,Liverpool,Nottingham,Manchester...there is or may be soon a zero tolerance policy for knives. Tradesmen will still be able to carry the tools of their trades though...including things like Stanley knives.

Swing When You're Winning $4.40 Apparently, Swing When You're Winning was inspired by the praise Robbie Williams received for his contribution to the soundtrack for Bridget Jones's Diary.
