Does removal of anarchist web sites make you feel safer?
In late January 2002 a large swat team arrested an 18-year old who hosted an Anarchist web sites from his parents home. In addition to anarchist philosophy, the sites contained crude/amateurish bomb making information that was and is readily available on the Internet from a multitude of web sites. After the confrontation and arrest he was threatened with a 20 year 'terrorism enhancement', which induced him to he sign a plea agreement. It appears that "distribution of bomb making information" illegal in the US. However, this does not seem to be applied equally across the Internet.
Austin was released from jail in July 2004 with 3 years probation. He released a rap CD called 'Silence is Defeat'. There were illegal wiretaps and threats on his life. Of course, today, we no longer need the courts approval for wire taps. Doesn't that make you feel safe?
You have to temper your question with the observation that anarchists have been wreaking havoc long before the internet. The loss of the site doesn't make me feel safer, and I feel ill when I consider the lewd, perverted filth waiting for impressionable young minds on this fabled thing we call the internet.
