Should my mom go to the clinic and get stitches?
My mom accidentally stabbed herself with a knife. It went about halfway through her thumb and bled tons and it still really hurts her but the bleeding stopped. The wound is purple/black. Should she get stitches?
It more depends on the depth and width of the wound. If it has stopped bleeding, that's good. It's actually good that it bled freely as that will help in clearing the wound of infective bacteria. If it is, say on a place where a 'butterfly' band aid will stabilize the tissue and allow it to mend together fairly easily, stitches might not be needed. Then, too, there are some places where there is so much instability in the area tissues that stitches are impossible, the hand, especially small areas like fingers, are problematic to suture. The one caveat about waiting to see, stitches should be applied within 24 hours.
