Where should i buy my more prized fish if i want to be ensured about their health? ( BGK ETC )?
I am setting up a fish tank with these fish:
Black Ghost knife
German Blue Ram
Kribensis ( meant for breeding purposes )
Bolivian ram
I want to make sure they are healthy before i take them home
As already mentioned, these should all be in separate tanks. The cichlids will argue, ESPECIALLY if something breeds, and the knife will indeed eat fry.
Testing employees is a good call. Clean tanks with few or no dead fish (I'll tell you right now it's near impossible to find ALL of the dead ones when you're going through...so don't be too harsh) are a good sign.
Ensure that they've had your fish for at least a week or two. The longer the better. This will make sure it has acclimated properly. At the Petco here, we get our stuff direct from a Florida farm, which is good. Farm - Store - Customer rather than Farm - Crowded Wholesaler - Store - Customer. Keep in mind that many fish are only at a wholesaler for a day to a week before reaching the store, and this can be very stressful. So, it's best to let them settle down for a week or two at the store.
A word about chain stores. These stores can be a great place to get fish, depending completely on the employees. I've seen plenty of bad LFS too. It may also be worth it to make a few trips to any store, and talk to a few employees. You may well find that one employee knows what he's doing, and the others don't, or one may have more experience in a particular type of fish you're interested in.
Go armed with questions that you already know the answers to, and strike up some conversations!
