Do you need to have some sort of fire fighter background or training to become a paramedic?
I was looking into some EMT-B classes to attend on my way to become a Paramedic. A friend of mine who is a firefighter, said I should take a Fire-1 course before I even attempt to take any kind of EMT classes because no Fire houses will hire a basic without knowledge in fire. Is this true?

The majority of paid fire department jobs do require you to be a fire medic, or at least a fire fighter. However, the fire department of one of the casinos near me hires paramedics who are not fire fighters, although they prefer fire medics.
As for your EMT, if you want a job as an EMT and not as a fire fighter, you certainly do not have to be a fire fighter to get your EMT!! There is nothing that you need to learn in Fire-1 or 2 that's going to help you in your EMT course. Get your EMT and work for an ambulance company. Spend 2 years doing that and go for your paramedic. If you want to job of a fire medic, somewhere in there take your fire courses.
