Can you use a climbing carabiner to tow?
I have a 12 kn climbing biner. can i use that if i need to tow something with rope of chains? or is supported to be used only for climbing?
I seriously, but respectfully, disagree with the other answers.
Climbing gear is for climbing. Period. Once used for a purpose other than climbing it is no longer climbing gear. I have old biners that I paint so they are clearly marked as out-of-service. They may clip stuff onto a pack, help hold a tarp, or tow the kids on a sled, but will never again be used in climbing.
Even my approach is frowned upon, and the best practice is to destroy, and dispose of any gear that is out-of-climbing service. Only this drastic approach prevents all possibility of the device being used for safety.
Climbing gear is exceptionally safe and rated with a significant safety factor. The only thing that can render it unsafe is a cavalier attitude about it's use and the thought that a little abuse is O-K. Drop one of my biners from much more than waist height and it goes out. Drop you own and return it to service, look for a different climbing partner!
