What do i need to buy for a Baby Boa-Constrictor?
Im buying a snake for my birthday that's coming up soon. i have a 10Gallon tank for the snake. now since its a boa what kind of beading do i need to buy? What else do i need to add to my snakes Tank to make it feel like its home? please let me know everything i need to buy. this is important. Thanks
A 10 gallon tank is too small even for a baby boa. You will not be able to get the proper temperature gradient in such a small tank and screen topped tanks are horrible for holding heat and humidity. It is also quite obvious that you are a beginner to snakes. A boa is not a good first time snake. You would be better off to start with corn snake.
If you are intent on getting the boa, then abandon the fish tank (or get you some nice small fish like neon tetras) and get a Sterilite or Rubbermaid bin (the clear ones) and drill some holes around the top third of the bin that are smaller than the snake's head. A human heating pad and a thermostat to regulate the temperature and to provide the power cycling necessary to overcome the safety on the heating pad, will provide all the heat that is needed in this type setup.
I recommend white paper towels as bedding early on because it will allow you to closely monitor whether or not the snake is pooping normally and such and will make mites easy to spot.
You will need a hide on both the warm and cool end of the bin. The little plastic igloo type hides are great for baby snakes because they are small enough to provide a nice tight, secure fit that makes the snake feel safe and they are easy to keep clean and won't harbor mites like the little half log hides will. Some fake greenery will also provide cover and security.
