Is the benchmade Axis folding knives Illegal in California? is it a gravity knife?
I do not know if these benchmade are illegal and need help. I see them at my nearby knife retailer being sold and do not trust sellers as they will lie to you to buy even if illegal( knife laws to me are tricky) I want to get the new griptilain cmp-M4 blade steel with carbon fiber handle found in the gold class (Benchmade)
Absolutely no, and same goes for assisted opening knives.
State law prohibits ballisongs(butterfly) and switchblades, but axis lock and many other types are fine.
Ballisong or gravity knife is defined in PC 653K:
For the purposes of this section, "switchblade knife" means a knife having the appearance of a pocketknife and includes a spring-blade knife, snap-blade knife, gravity knife or any other similar type knife, the blade or blades of which are two or more inches in length and which can be released automatically by a flick of a button, pressure on the handle, flip of the wrist or other mechanical device, or is released by the weight of the blade or by any type of mechanism whatsoever.
So, it's not axis lock, as the push on the button or flick alone aren't enough to release the blade.
Automatic axis locks are automatics, to they're under switchblades, but they operate differently than standard axis lock knives.
However, many towns and cities can have their restrictions. I've never heard of Axis lock being banned, but LA and SF do have blade length restrictions, 3" is a max.
In the end, you perhaps still have to check with your local authorities, but state law is fine with them Axis.

As for the knife, CPM M4 is a very good steel for folders and even medium/large knives.
